Core 84

Core 84 was inspired by Bishnu Ghosh’s yoga system consisting of asanas (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing exercises), mudras (muscular control), kriyas (cleansing techniques), and bandhas (body locks). Bishnu Ghosh was Paramahansa Yogananda’s younger brother and one of his first yoga students at the Ranchi School for boys, in India. At the Ranchi school, Bishnu learned a yoga system called “Yogoda” based on the philosophy of the “Hatha Yoga Pradikipa” a text written by Swami Svatmarama in the 15th century, a collection of earlier hatha yoga texts. Swami Svatmarama introduced his system as a preparatory stage for physical purification before higher meditation or Raja Yoga. In his text, Svatmarama introduced a number of yoga masters (Siddhas) including Adi Nath (Known as Shiva or first yogi), Matsyendranath (known as the founder of Hatha yoga) and Gorakhnath (Matsyendranth’s student). The Hatha Yoga Pradikipa is considered the guiding light to the mystic world of Hatha yoga. This branch of yoga focuses on the purification of the body by the practice of asana, pranayama, bandha, mudra, and kriya. It is the foundation for the practice of Raja yoga and samadhi.
