Ultimate Core 26+
Core 26+, this yoga system was inspired by Bikram’s yoga based on 26 asanas and two pranayama exercises. There are noticeable differences between these two systems; Bikram yoga, never changes and is done in a “Hot Room” which is heated to 105 degrees F (40 degrees C) to warm up the body from the outside in. In this hot temperature many students experience adverse side effects such as: over heating, dehydration, tiredness, dizziness and cramping. In the other hand, Core 26+ is done in a room heated to 95 degrees F (35 degrees C) to warm up the body from the inside out by the effort invested in the practice. The poses in Core 26+ can be modified based on the needs of the practitioners. The benefits from generating internal heat due to the hard work during the practice include: lose weight, improve balance, reduce stress, feel happier, and sleep better.

Ultimate Core 26+
Core 26+ is a beginners system, composed of 26 asanas, a few variations, and three breathing exercises. This practice starts with Standing Deep Breathing and the Anatomical breathing to warm up the body in preparation for the asanas that followed and ends with Kapalabhati, a breathing exercise to detox the body right before the deep relaxation that takes place at the end of the practice. The sequence of breathing exercises and asanas are laid out in a way that will help condition the body, improve mind-body connection, enhance, and maintain ultimate physical and mental fitness. This is done by improving the overall flow of energy and blood circulation throughout the body through compression, extension and twisting of all the bodily systems, including muscular, nervous, respiratory, circulatory and digestive.

Core 84
Core 84 was inspired by Bishnu Ghosh’s yoga system consisting of asanas (yoga poses), pranayama (breathing exercises), mudras (muscular control), kriyas (cleansing techniques), and bandhas (body locks). Bishnu Ghosh was Paramahansa Yogananda’s younger brother and one of his first yoga students at the Ranchi School for boys, in India. At the Ranchi school, Bishnu learned a yoga system called “Yogoda” based on the philosophy of the “Hatha Yoga Pradikipa” a text written by Swami Svatmarama in the 15th century, a collection of earlier hatha yoga texts. Swami Svatmarama introduced his system as a preparatory stage for physical purification before higher meditation or Raja Yoga. In his text, Svatmarama introduced a number of yoga masters (Siddhas) including Adi Nath (Known as Shiva or first yogi), Matsyendranath (known as the founder of Hatha yoga) and Gorakhnath (Matsyendranth’s student). The Hatha Yoga Pradikipa is considered the guiding light to the mystic world of Hatha yoga. This branch of yoga focuses on the purification of the body by the practice of asana, pranayama, bandha, mudra, and kriya. It is the foundation for the practice of Raja yoga and samadhi.

Core 84
The number eighty-four holds a special symbolic significance in the world of yoga. It is found in several different contexts such as 84 asanas, 84 Mahasiddhas, 84 phallic representations (linga) of Shiva, 84 Tantras, and so on. Traditionally, the number 84 signifies completeness, and in some cases, sacredness. Eighty-four asanas are mentioned in several ancient texts including the Hatha Yoga Pradikipa, the Hatha Yoga Ratnaval, and the Shiva Samhita, but only two texts describe the complete system of 84 asanas, the Hatharatnavali by Srinivasa and the Jogapradipaka by Jayatarama. The names of the 84 asanas in these two texts differ considerably from one another. They appear to have been compiled from different sources. And in 2003 I “Tony Sanchez” printed a poster title “Classic 84 Asanas” to honor the Ghosh’s lineage. After the publication of this poster many other modern yoga teachers came up with their own versions of the 84 asanas.

Core 84
The Classic 84 Asanas: Core 84 starts with Virabhadrasana (representation of Shiva as the Warrior), followed by Suryanamaskar (Sun Salutation) and Ardha-Chandrasana (Half-moon series) and continue with postures representing different deities and nature itself. Core 84 introduces five different categories of asanas: standing, sitting, prone, supine and inverted. This system is designed to exercise all the systems in the body including skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory digestive, etc. in a gradual and progressive way to bring about a state of calm clarity, balanced energy, and lightness of body and mind. Every posture in the system creates a unique style of mind-body connection, and together the 84 asanas result in greater physical and mental balance. At the heart of this practice are five basic principles: breath, focus, energy, core engagement, and flow.

The Yoga Challenge systems were developed in the 80’s after I (Tony Sanchez) left the Bikram’s Yoga College of India. These systems were taught at the SF yoga studio for over 20 years. Yoga Challenge one is very similar to Bikram’s 26 & 2 system, with the exception that in this system I introduced exercises to work on the abdominal muscles, arm and upper body muscles which in Bikram’s system are missing. The Yoga Challenge one, practice manual is for instructors-in-training and home practitioners. Detailed instructions include modifications and basic principles of movement for a injury-free yoga practice.

Hot Yoga is taking off in lots of directions these days…
But this sequence AS IS is brilliant and worth sticking with.
One thing about Sanchez…(I have to mention his videos – He goes beyond the beginners class which is great… Bikram fans may never get to see anything but the beginners series… Tony will show you what it looks like and you can join when you are ready.) – Philosaphia

Yoga Challenge One provides invaluable support for those that which to deepen their practice, either at home, or through a great grasp of the underpinnings of practice in the studio. Perfect companion for those that no longer have proximity to a good studio. Many of the asanas will be familiar to Bikram practitioners, since they’re drawn from the Ghosh’s 84 classic asanas. Tony Sanchez goes beyond by not only including a vital abdominal series as well as some deeper stretching and twists, but also shedding light on maintaining alignment with the three planes. – Harry B.
